Wangpo replaces Chungdak Koren, who submitted her resignation in March citing health reasons. Wangpo secured the third highest votes in the last parliamentary elections from Europe constituency, which is represented in the Tibetan Parliament by two members. He is a Tibetan resident of Switzerland, and has been involved in various services to the Tibetan community including the campaign for jailed Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen. Speaker Penpa Tsering congratulated Wangpo and wished him best for his tenure as a Tibetan parliamentarian. Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Wangpo said that the European Union being the most important body in Europe will be an area where he would make efforts to meet leaders to highlight the the current crisis in Tibet. Wangpo Tethong was born in Switzerland in 1963. He is currently involved in the campaign for the release of filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen. The parliament is scheduled to meet for its next session from September 12 to 24, 2014. The Tibetan Parliament-in-exile, based in Dharamsala, which also serves as the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-exile, is the highest legislative organ of the exile polity. The current 15th Tibetan Parliament has 44 members, who are elected representing the three traditional provinces, four Tibetan Buddhist sects and the traditional Bon religion of Tibet. The members are directly elected by Tibetan exiles above the age of 18 from their respective around the world. |
